Smudge sticks

Lavender Smudge Stick

Once your lavender has faded – don’t throw it out – bundle into a smudge stick. Derived from Native American culture – smudge sticks are used to cleanse places. Other traditional smudging herbs are Sweetgrass, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. We use lavender, but you can combine with other herbs as well. Just Choose herbs that you love the smell of.

Line up your stems to the length you want to use – Generally 9 inches or less. Cut a length of twine or any 100% cotton thread that is 4 times the length of your bundle. Make a slip knot around the base of your bundle and tighten. With the long end of the string begin to wrap the bundle tightly spiraling up the bundle and then criss cross back down. The the loose end to the original know at the base of your stick. Hand upside down in sunny window to dry for 2-3 weeks.

To Smudge – light the end of the bundle with a wooden match- blow out the flame and continue to burn. (Don’t use a lighter) Fan the smoke as you move around your space. Have a non flammable dish on hand to tamp out the burn when you are done – Old ashtrays, Surf Clams, or Glass bowls will do.

Your smudge stick can be reused – tamp out flame in an ashtray – the way you would a cigarette- and light again when you want to reuse. Always be careful with flames and be sure burn is completely out – before storing or disposing.
